A bird with a “clown face” nickname
Very, very interesting. Thanks, Dan!
Thanks Michele.
Very good pictures and narrative.
Thank you.
Very helpful for ID!
Thanks Calvin.
Happy to benefit from your being so observant, and generous with your research!
Thanks Sally. I hope you aren't feeling the smoke in the air these days.
Interesting. Now I'm going to be looking for red chest dots every time I see an acorn woodpecker.
LOL. Good luck. We all may find more if we begin looking for them.
Extra neat info, Dan. Thx! I’ll add that Michigan folks say Woody’s creation was inspired by their Piliated Woodpecker. Imagine that!
I think Woody's behavior and attitude was inspired by the Acorn but his looks by the Pileated!!
Very cool. Either that bird is way out of its range or its a color variant that exists here in a few birds but that is much more common further south.
Rick Taylor's Birds of Arizona book says they are present down to 3500' elevation but this one had some cousins from much further south!!! We need to begin looking more closely at our photos from now on.
