What a great collection! Interesting that you saw the grosbeak. We just had one at our feeder in Northern WI a couple days ago. We’re hoping it hangs around.
There are a number of rodents in that area, most commonly cotton rats (cousins to pack rats). Various adult and young fledgling birds could be the prey of choice. Kingsnakes also eat other snakes, but that bulge seemed too small for that big of an item. Baby rabbits on a nest are also available. Those would be my first thoughts.

I didn’t think they went there.” I’m impressed when I see one here (Chicagoland) but there? Terrific sighting. And, snake with bulge! As usual, great photos and narrative. Thank you!
