Big birds! One of the photos of the Rivoli hummer reminds me of the jump of a ballet dancer

Thanks!

They, the dancer and the hummingbird, are both so graceful and seem to float weightlessly in the air.

Very interesting. I had no idea Hummingbirds could be that big or colorful!

I tried last summer, but no hummingbirds ever found it 😕

LOL. You might give it another try this summer. At some point, one of them is going to find it and then they’ll tell all their friends.

Thanks, Patty. And the colors and variety of the hummingbirds in Central America are just stunning compared to these. You should hang up a feeder outside your home to be able to draw the Ruby-throated hummingbirds in your neighborhood!

Dan: at what speed did you shoot these photos to freeze the bird in flight? Great photos - exquisite!👏🙏👍

Jeffrey, Thanks Jeffrey. The flight shots of the hummingbird were taken at 1/4000 of a second. That's pretty darn fast!

Dan, Great post and photos. Thanks for the range maps and comparison of these two "big hummers." We see the Rivoli's at 7000 feet during the summer on Mt Lemmon, but I cannot remember seeing the Mountain Gem. They are tough to photograph, you have done a great job!

Thanks Henry. It's always a treat to see these birds and capturing images of them are special. Hopefully you'll get yours this summer too!
