Yes, they are. Imagine their joy when, after spending their entire lives inside an old abandoned building, they begin to fly and see a coastline with endless water and islands all around!!
Very fine photos and commentary. FYI, during my winter stays in Tucson, I've seen the Hooded Merganser, the Violet-green Swallows, and the Barn Swallows, at Agua Caliente Park in Tanque Verde. This past winter, though, I only saw one pair of Hooded Merganser and they didn't stay long -- I think they were building a nest in the wrong place where too many people would walk by, so they left. As for the Violet-green Swallows, they were out in large numbers every evening over the ponds, putting on quite a show. Had never seen one before. Having tried to photograph them in the evening, I was mostly unsuccessful -- fast flyers! Really enjoyed your Hooded Merganser photo though they were all great.
Those barn swallows in the nest are pretty darn cute!
