Could it be the amount of time spent hunting for food that you observe is due to the time of year? It is winter, low insect activity. Also, insects are getting scarce everywhere. Over many years I've noticed birds feeding, then resting or doing other things for parts of the day. They often have feeding times but certainly don't work all day at it unless chicks are growing. The past few years, where I observe, there seems to be more time spent feeding and I suspect lack of food is part of the reason. That lack could be from many causes. Any observations about this? Thanks.

That certainly could be Janine. There are fewer daylight hours for hunting during the winter. Raptors sure do spend much of their time perched and not hunting. Each species is different and perhaps I'm just seeing them when they are active, out and about.
