Not Much More Needs to Be Said When You are This Pretty
Dec. 11, 2024: Male Vermilion Flycatchers are pretty spectacular
Over the past month, I've seen Vermilion Flycatchers at a number of places I've visited, some at the same place but days or weeks apart. Cornell Lab of Ornithology describes this species on its allaboutbird.org page as: "A feathered ember in a desert landscape, the male Vermilion Flycatcher is exactly what its name says: a brilliant red bird that hawks flying insects from conspicuous perches on shrub tops and fences." Nothing much more needs to be said:
An immature male....
Another immature male with just about all of his adult feathers grown in, flying back to its perch after snagging a bug on the surface of the lake..
The range map at allaboutbirds shows that the Vermilion Flycatchers are only found year-round in the United States in southern Arizona, Southern Texas, and southern Nevada.
