These are all new to me and learning about their habits is very interesting. I am happy to hear they will head north soon. Spring is on its way! I see many ducks on my walks and always wonder why the males have the curly duck tails and not the females.

Thank you. Male mallard ducks have that curly tail feather (the duck tail) that you mention. All domestic ducks were bred from mallards, so they may share that look. Male and female ducks often have different plumage.

I have Mallards come in daily to eat, I have food for other birds and deer on the ground along with the bird feeders in the tree. We have several inches of snow on the ground and the weather is in the 30's and 40s with strong winds on most days. I think if I was a duck I'd fly SOUTH.

They're out there somewhere. I found my pair at Columbus Park, but I often see them at Kennedy Park as well.
