More Birds plus a Cow at the Stock Pond

The water hole was such a busy, needed resource until the summer rains arrived

I have not returned to the stock pond since early July but here are more photos of what I saw during that visit. I am used to seeing Vermilion Flycatchers frequently at local urban parks, schoolyards, and fields. It is always nice to find them ‘out’ in the desert. This female was hunting insects at the stock pond.

The male Vermilion Flycatcher was also working the pond for food. There were plenty of insects to choose from.

A Lark Sparrow showed up for a drink. These birds have such a distinctive face.

A thirsty bird has to drink. In early July it had yet to rain in the desert and the days were hot! That stock pond was an incredible resource for so many birds.

One cow showed up during early morning hours when we sat by the pond. There were a lot of flies feeding on the moisture and nutrients on that cow’s face!!

A beautiful female Northern Yellow Warbler came in for a drink.

The dark black eye stands out against the soft yellow color of this Yellow Warbler.

Now that the summer rains have arrived, I am certain that the birds are all finding water sources throughout their habitat. The cattle still depend on this stock tank, but it is likely much less ‘birdy’ these days.
