This is a birder's paradise. Over the 25 years I've lived in Catalina Vista, I've seen over 70 species in my yard alone, which never ceases to amaze me. But these water birds are new to me. Thanks for the introduction.

How many hatch at one time?

American Coots lay between 5-12 eggs; Pied-billed Grebes lay 5-7 on average; Ruddy ducks average 8 eggs. I'm not sure how many hatch and the early survival rate.

Had no idea the babies were so comical.

Usually they remain hidden behind the reeds but we are lucky to have found a spot where the babies are out in the open often.
