Growing up in New York, we saw plenty of Cardinals. My dad was a pretty good whistler and would sit on the back deck and call back at them- he was pretty good at it!
Wow...the desert cardinal is a beautiful bird as well. Had no idea they existed. Thank you for including that shot and information. I get many visits from the cardinals in my bird feeder and love seeing them. Especially the male in the winter. The bright red so vibrant against the snow. Another bird I see in certain spots is the cedar waxwing. Such a resemblance in some features to the cardinal. Is this a bird that you see in your area?
We do get Cedar Waxwings in Tucson most winters. The amount of waxwings varies so much from year to year. There haven't been as many this winter but two winters ago there were quite a few. They are beautiful birds!!
This was the first winter I noticed them still here. It seems that more and more birds stay when they used to migrate. So many Robins now. It amazes me that the ones that do fly south go so far. Experiencing so much and continuing to persevere. Remarkable and inspiring
Dan, in Texas, in my youth ( many, many years ago) everyone called them Redbirds. Have no recollection of when I learned they were cardinals. Still some times say red bird but folks think I’m commenting on color not the common name I learned.

I would have loved seeing him to that. What a special memory for you.
We love our beauty cardinals in Wisconsin, with their color and song. Thanks for this!

It's a pretty good name. I guess they do things differently in Texas.
It is like all three birds took turns modeling on the same cholla! Wonderful comparison.
It was fun to watch, and all of this action was within a half hour's time.
