You prompted me to look it up myself. I found a few possibilities: a siege, a sedge, and a scattering. Based on the action I saw, this definitely was a "scattering" of blue herons!! Let me know if you find anything different!
Good story with illustrations! I've seen Snowy and Great Egrets in territorial disputes but never have I witnessed Great Blue Herons in that kind of situation.
